Web Trend Map 4 - Final Beta
Here it is, posted in a panic: Web Trend Map 4. We’ll give you a week for final feedback before we send it to the printer.
Download: For the final feedback round, we only offer a PNG (2.6MB). There are more formats to come.
Feedback: Use the comment section below for feedback. Missing Web Trend Setters, missing websites, tips and mistakes only, please. No hate (we know we suck), no love (we know you still love us), no novels (we know that you know a lot).
To order: we will only print 1,000 maps, so send a mail to us with the subject “Reserve WTM” to reserve a copy, and we’ll put you on the list (not binding).
This is just awesome! Incredible piece of work, thank you for this.
Tubes tubes tubes! Nice!
Nice visualization! But in the Web Trend Ranking : Google owns Yahoo! (OMG) And it’s Firefox, not FireFox =]
In the main map you write «facebook» and in the legend you refer to it as «FaceBook.» The camel-case looks definitely weird and I haven’t seen it anywhere used officially.
Cheers, Daniel
P.S. Same thing with «Firefox» vs «FireFox.» What’s the rationale behind this?
Hui, many mistakes already. Thanks, guys.
I love that you put Yahoo! being a brand of Google :)
Also, Reddit belongs to Wired.com > CondeNet > Condé Nast.
Continuing from where Daniel Gasienica left off - isn’t “Adwords” supposed to be AdWords? The same goes for Doubleclick (DoubleClick) and Adsense (AdSense). And Adbrite and so on…
Besides those minor annoyances, nicely done!
I almost missed it, but shouldn’t “IMBD” be “IMDB”?
Also, “DeviantArt” should be “deviantART”. They’re pretty consistent about that.
And “Deposite Files” has to be “Deposit Files”, right?
Lawrence Lessig on there twice… intentional?
(Okay, I’ll stop. Really, this thing is awesome, despite the nitpicking!)
Very good! The colours look great on the black background.
“Aftonbladed” should be “Aftonbladet”
Oliver - looks great again. Not sure if you considered Ray Ozzie on the Microsoft line aswell as Live Mesh from an Apps point of view and Windows Azure as similar to EC2
let me know if you need any more info
Steve
Although the logo is “VOX”, SixApart writes it as “Vox” when it’s in text. I guess that makes either correct :)
Should Deviant Art be on there twice?
The person associated with Facebook should be Mark Zuckerberg, not Jeff Bezos. Also, what about Jack Dorsey of Twitter, who had the original idea for the concept?
Great work nonetheless and again! Would be nice if you could post the price for a print.
Where did the Open Source applications go? Too much Google on the application line.
Thanks for the feedback. Some really bad typos there. Especially in the top 50 list. Sorry about that. We posted it Friday night in a come-what-will-it-has-to-go-out-mood. Also: Trackbacks are not working right now. Will fix both problems on Monday.
@John: What applications exactly are missing?
Love it!
Any chance that we can get a PDF version so we can print it nice and big for the office wall?
That would be awesome!
Thanks, Adam.
Amazing web-trend map!
How much will the prints cost?
@Collin: Don’t know exactly. We’re getting the best printing quality and this time we’re also trying to find the nicest possible packaging. Last A0 poster was USD 55.- (shipping included). Can’t tell you yet how much this one is going to cost, but we’ll try to get as high as possible with the quality.
You missed out the BBC.
Beautiful! :) There’s a small error on the ranking line at the bottom, reddit (no. 15) is indicated with stations in the application and knowledge lines, while on the map its station is on the filter and knowledge lines.
Nice presentation, but inacurate representation… How can a 10 miilion users SNS (Mixi) be there when the 1 billion users SNS (QQ/QZone) is missing?
Merci beaucoup ! Amazing work !
The web Trend Map 4 is a refreshing art representation of web.
Google is omnipresent on this map. Myspace and last.fm have found a station but I don’t understand why Music services as Deezer or Hype Machine are not on the map.
Does the final version add extra maps (like other year)?
Great visualization! Chapeau!
In the ranking bar you misspelled (sp? ehr..) StumbleUpon, the ‘l’ went missing. Why is jQuery on the sharing line? I’d have thought the application or publishing line more appropriate. But I realize it must be tricky to get everything placed correctly at the same time, you did a great job! :-)
Why not list Dries Buytaert for Drupal? Mark Boulton is leading the redesign of Drupal.org but I would have to consider Dries more influential in the Drupal world.
this kicks ass. do you guys already know what the size of the poster will be?
i doublechecked, i think i didnt notice the biggest share site of them all, with the biggest storage space on the planet, after google: Rapidshare. as deposit files and some other are mentioned i believe this one must go in.
a pdf would be nice! awesome work on the map!
Possible inconsistency: the lime green line is called “Monetization” in the legend on the lower left, but “Advertisement” on the map itself.
I lived in Japan for over 10 years….so true!
Another inconsistency: at the top of the turquoise “Opinion” line it’s labeled “Blogs”
IMDB should be IMDb (see their logo for confirmation) Hulu should be hulu in the ranking list skype on the line and on the ranking list do not match in case. Technically either are correct. Their logo is all lower, but they mention their own brand in text with initial cap. Craigslist is usually not initial cap. The few items not connected to tubes seems somewhat inconsistent on reasoning and placement in proximity to the respective line. ie. MySpace looks as if it could belong to any of the three lines it is near, but only the color denotes which. The distance from the orange line seems a bit confusing. — Perhaps that is just me.
I’m really liking this and look forward to seeing the final product. Sorry for the nitpicking. [:
where’s Yelp at?
Nice map! I think Richard Jones should be on there with Felix Miller and Martin Stiksel, though.
at the very bottom-left corner of the image, it is asserted that Yahoo is owned by Google. Did I miss some big news recently?
Read Write Web is a great site I think they should be on it
http://www.rrw.com
Shouldn’t gmail be on both the red lines and the orange lines? (i.e. identity + application, with two circles on top of its tower). I don’t get that hotmail can be considered an app, but gmail can’t.
FontShop is spelled with a cap ‘S’. Thanks!
I’ll definitely order it; it’ll cost more than $55 just in ink to print it ourselves!
Really terrific info design. Have you shown Tufte? I’m sure he’ll get a big thrill out of this one. Far more striking than v3.
is it right that deviantart is on there twice?
Wow, cool. I love to see the new one in Print. Will you keep the background in black?
I found a mistake. “Hiroyuki Nishino”, near the 2ch, is to be “Hiroyuki Nishimura”.
Great map once again! Ps. FontShop is named twice! Next to Expedia and under Flash. (hopeing for a second white version!)
Shouldn’t Netlog (http://www.netlog.com) be on there?
No hard feelings, but I think you forgot Netlog ;)
this is amazing. serves as a inspiration, This will make an awesome desktop wallpaper (different background colors will help) see it and get inspired :)
Update: We’ve just updated the map. 99% of the mistakes mentioned above have been corrected (Netlog is still missing).
This is amazing, and will end up on my desktop very soon. Though surely xkcd deserves a mention? :)
usually i never put comments but i like this peace of design is really help full and informative
